OLTL Music Man Composer David Nichtern branches out
If you've ever fallen head over heels in love with the beautifully orchestrated music playing in the background on One Life to Live, you're not alone. In fact, after years of receiving mail from viewers begging to have a copy of the show's memorable music to play during weddings or other special events, longtime OLTL composer David Nichtern decided it was time to release his first album, "From Here To Nichternity."
"I wrote an Irish theme for Patrick and Marty and we got incredible amounts of mail about it," says Nichtern, a Grammy Award-winning songwriter and composer, who during his diverse career, has played with Jerry Garcia, worked with Patti LuPone (the original "Evita" on Broadway), and wrote the award-winning song "Midnight At The Oasis."
"One woman wrote me a beautiful, tender letter saying that she wanted to play Marty and Patrick's theme at her wedding," he says. Nichtern, who is a guitarist by trade, loves to vary his musical styles - and incorporates everything from latin salsa music (remember Antonio's welcome-home party at club Indigo when he and Tea danced up a storm?) to brooding guitar solos into the show. "Todd's themes," he says, are among his favorites. "He's deep and dark...and I've written all kinds of music for him."
Nichtern, who has been working on the ABC soap since 1991, recently met with the show's new executive producer Jill Farren Phelps and head-writer Pam Long. In keeping with the show's new focus, "they want the music to go in a slightly more contemporary direction," he says, adding that all the music he writes "is storyline driven. We try and capture the quality of the characters, whether they are anxious, troubled or in love."
The CD, which sells for $15.95, is available on his website at www.nudgie.com. Or fans can order it by calling 1-800-395-0555. To sample the music for free, call 1-888-GET-MUSIC; just don't forget to mention artist code: 2215.
