David then begins laying down tracks. As he begins selecting timbres and playing the parts on the synthesizer, the computer turns every note into data and records it in a digital format. Once stored in the computer's memory, the music can be manipulated in a variety of ways... It can be stretched, squeezed, sped up or slowed down. Much like a word processor, David can cut and paste the music he has recorded. He can also experiment with different sounds by telling the computer to play parts back with different timbres. To build an orchestration, David selects a new track and plays a new instrument part into the computer. When this layering process is complete, the computer can play all the parts back simultaneously. Or, individual tracks or groups of tracks may be selected so David can hear how different combinations of instruments sound together. Once all the backing tracks are in place, David can then lay down live instrumental tracks, which often times is a sax, or his own signature guitar sound. But first...
