What is RealAudio?
RealAudio provides a way to deliver audio (and video too!) through the internet to your computer in real time.
So what! Who cares?
This means two things to you: first of all, you can listen to audio without first having to save it to your hard drive, wasting valuable space. More importantly however, is that there's no download time. Once you make your selection, audio is immediately sent to your computer, and you can listen to it as it's received. It's like listening to the radio - but on your computer!
How is this possible?
Computers and internet connections are fast enough now that audio can be played as fast as it's received. Since there is a limit to how much data can be quickly sent to your computer over the internet, the audio has to be compressed before being sent to you. As a result, some detail and clarity is lost. This situation is constantly improving as high-speed connections become more common.
What do I need to experience RealAudio?
As long as your computer and your internet connection speed meet the minimum requirements, and your web browser supports it, all you need is the the RealAudio player plug-in!
And what are these minimum requirements?
We recommend visiting the RealAudio system requirements page. They provide comprehensive charts for performance, features and. minimum hardware for Macintosh, Wintel, and Unix platforms.
